The Community Development and Health (CDH) Programme lives between two areas of work: Developing communities and neighbourhoods, and Public Health. The Programme aims to tackle inequalities, build resilience, caring for ourselves, and finding wellness. By learning about Community Development, participants also review their practical skills and foundation knowledge essential to delivering services for the people of Sheffield.
The course contents include Communications, Managing People, Developing a Project, Consulting and Engaging Participation; Equalities, Diversity and Inclusivity in Practice.
We begin with our own personal confidence, critical awareness and how we have overcome personal difficulties. In a safe environment with the support of our peers, we can rethink our values and perceptions. Though the learning programme is not ‘therapy’, past participants gave feedback that the discussions and connecting with others weekly in class, was helpful and therapeutic. We will recall why we came to work for the local authority or do public services; and to remember that we are a resource that is most valuable.
